Here are why water bottle brands are priced so differently

Plastic water bottles are everywhere these days and it has become ubiquitous. The water bottles come in many varieties. By the way, the bottled water looks all the same, but those are priced differently. Why do so? The reasons of pricing discrepancy are varied and complex. Two major drivers of higher prices for the end consumer are from improving product image and marketing cost. Some water bottle companies target higher-end consumer demographic. As highlighting sleek designs and marketing campaigns, they try to make the customers recognize their products as premium water and get high price. In contrast, a few brands struggle to gain market share due to a lack of brand recognition and consumer trust, as offering similar products at a lower price point.

The differences in distribution channel also impact their pricing. Although premium brands are selling out online or exclusive sales network, more affordable water must compete for sales in the market. As it were, price differences have nothing to do with the liquid inside the container. The consumers don’t pay for the actual water, but more so for the label. The water companies are working hard to stand out to get people buy something that they could turn on their faucet and get for free. They might spend a lot money on a fancy advertising campaign or to bring on a celebrity spokesperson to promote their brand, which hikes up the price. Aquafina, the U.S. water company, was required to label their bottles “P.W.S” from the FDA, which means it comes from a public water source. After revealed that the company had been selling the tap water, they were sanctioned to forcibly specify that this is made of ‘Public Water Source.’

If you want to splurge on something more expensive, there is no excuses, but there is no need to feel cheated even when you drink an affordable pricing water. Some people say “selling water is a marketing strategy to prey on people’s fears and insecurities,” and blame the companies, saying like “they are kind of Seon-dal Kim, who sold water that is supposed to drink with free of charge.”
