대학에서 스페인어 가르치던 강사 시절, 파라과이에서 역유학 온 교포 여학생이 있었다. 현지에서 성장했으니 스페인어를 원어민처럼 자유자재로 구사했다. 한국엔 친인척도 없는 그 학생에게 “사석에선 오빠라고 부르라”고 했다. 그러자 갑자기 깔깔대며 웃어대기 시작했다.

During my Spanish instructor period in the university, there was one female overseas Korean student who came from Paraguay to study abroad. Since grown up in Paraguay, she speak Spanish fluently like a native speaker. I told that please call me ‘Oppa’ in private to her who has no relatives in Korea. Then, she was bursting(burst-burst) into giggles and laughter.

 

‘opa’라는 단어가 있다. 스페인어에선 p가 ‘ㅍ’가 아닌 경음 ‘ㅃ’로 발음된다. 그래서 ‘오빠’로 읽힌다. 문제는 스페인이나 다른 중남미 국가들과 달리 파라과이·아르헨티나·볼리비아·우루과이에선 opa가 바보·멍청이·천치라는 뜻으로 통한다는 것이다. 그 여학생에게 “나를 멍청이라고 불러”라고 한 셈이니 우스꽝스럽게 들렸던 것이다.

There is a word called ‘Oppa’. In Spanish, ‘p’ is pronounced with the hard sound ‘ㅃ’ rather than ‘ㅍ’. So, it is read as ‘Oppa’. The problem is that, unlike Spain and other Latin American countries, in Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia and Uruguay, ‘opa’ is translated as idiot, fool, stupid. Since I requested to her “Call me stupid,” she sounded ludicrous.

 

미국에서 영어 교사로 일하는 영국인이 미국인들이 영국에 가서 절대 사용하면 안 되는 영어 단어 세 가지를 소셜미디어에 소개해 관심을 모은다. 전혀 다른 의미로 해석돼 자칫 큰 오해를 일으킬 수 있다고 한다. 첫 번째 단어는 ‘fanny’다. 미국에선 벨트처럼 허리에 둘러차는 주머니 같은 작은 가방 fanny pack의 줄임말로, 엉덩이 위에 걸친다고 해서 bumbag이라고도 부른다. 그런데 이 단어가 영국에선 아주 어색하고 불편한 어감으로 쓰인다. 여성의 은밀한 부위를 지칭한다.

A British person who are working as English tutor in the U.S. introduced three English words that should not be used in the UK on social media, and it is now drawing attentions. Those three words can be translated as absolutely different meaning, and cause big misunderstandings. The first word is ‘fanny.’ It is an abbreviation for fanny pack, a small pouch-like bag worn around the waist like a belt, and is also called bumbag because it is worn on the hips. However, this word is used in a very awkward connotation in the UK, refering to a woman’s private parts.

 

영국인, 특히 축구팬들이 극도로 혐오하는 것 중 또 하나는 ‘soccer’다. 축구 종주국으로서 엄연히 football이라는 공식 단어를 만들어 놓았는데, 축구도 못하는 미국인들이 제멋대로 soccer로 바꿔 부르며 폄하하는 것에 분통을 터뜨리고 노발대발한다.

One of the pet peeve for the British, especially football fan, is the word ‘Soccer.’ As the birthplace of the football, the British already created the official word ‘football’, but the American arbitrarily called it soccer differently, so the British exploded in anger and flew( into a fury.

 

세 번째는 이마 앞쪽 머리를 말하는 미국식 단어 ‘bangs’다. 영국에선 ‘fringe’라고 하기 때문에 미용실 가서 ‘bangs’ 다듬어 달라고 하면 무슨 말인지 못 알아들은 미용사로부터 멍한 시선을 받게 된다.

The third one is the American word ‘bangs’, which describes hair in front of your forehead. Since it is called ‘fringe’ in the UK, when you go to a hair salon and ask to have your ‘bangs’ trimmed, you will get a blank stare from the hairdresser who doesn’t understand what you’re talking about.

 

이런 내용이 소셜미디어를 통해 새삼 알려지자 영국인들 놀릴 좋은 방법이 있다며, 앞서 세 단어를 버무려 감정을 촉발하는 문장으로 고안한 댓글이 속속 등장하고 있다 그중 하나는 이렇다. “앞머리 자르고 새 허리 주머니 가방 하나를 산 뒤에 사커 경기 보러 갔다.”

As these contents has been spread out, some comments devised as a triggering sentence out of these three words have appeared, saying like there was a good way to poke fun at the British. One of them is like this: “I got my bangs cut, shopped(shop-shopped-shopped) for a new fanny, and then went to watch a soccer game.”

 

이렇게 놀려댄 것이 미안하다고 해서 “너 화났어?”라며 위로한답시고 ‘Are you mad?” 하면 상대 영국인은 그야말로 뚜껑이 열려버린다. 미국에선 mad가 ‘몹시 화가 난’ 뜻으로도 쓰이지만, 영국에선 오로지 ‘미친(crazy)’ ‘정신 나간(insane)’ 의미로만 사용되기 때문에 상처에 소금 뿌려 염장 지르는 꼴이 되고 만다.

Since you felt sorry to make fun of them, if you said to them ‘Are you mad?” to console, the British will literally flip their lid. In the US, the word ‘mad’ is also used to express ‘be outraged’, but in the UK it is only used to mean ‘crazy’ and ‘insane’, which is like rubbing salt into the wound.
