[윤희영의 News English] 한국 문학 영문 번역 일등공신 싱가포르 여성
한국 문학 작품들이 뒤늦게나마 여러 외국어로 번역돼 전 세계에 소개되면서 반향을 일으키고 있다. 그동안 일본과 달리 한국 작품이 노벨 문학상 후보로 언급조차 되지 못한 것은 섬세한 작품 내용과 한국어 특유의 미묘한 어감이 제대로 번역되지 못한 탓이었다.
하지만 최근엔 한국 번역 작품 2개가 세계 3대 문학상인 부커상 후보로 동시에 올라가는 등 번역이 알차게 이뤄지면서 문학적 가치를 인정받기 시작했다. 한국 작품 영문 번역은 흔히 영어 실력이 출중한 국내 번역가 또는 한국어도 능통한 교포 1.5세나 2세가 하는 것으로 여겨졌다. 실제로 대부분은 그랬다. 그런데 최근 한국과는 아무런 인연도 없는 엉뚱한 외국인이 한국 작품 영문 번역에 큰 기여를 하고 있어 관심을 모은다.
올해 33세인 싱가포르 여성 샤나 탄. 영미권 최대 출판사인 펭귄랜덤하우스, 해리포터를 출간한 블룸스버리는 한국 작품을 영어권 시장에 내놓기 위해 한영 번역을 맡길 때 한국인이 아닌 그녀를 먼저 찾는다. 한국에서 20만부 이상 팔리면서 베스트셀러가 된 황보름 작가의 장편소설 ‘어서 오세요, 휴남동 서점입니다’를 최근 ‘Welcom To The Hyunam-dong Bookshop’이라는 제목으로 번역한 것도 그녀였고, 올해 펭귄랜덤하우스 자회사인 더블데이가 윤정은 작가의 ‘메리골드 마음 세탁소’ 번역을 의뢰한 상대도 한국인이 아닌 그녀다.
샤나 탄은 싱가포르 일간지 ‘더 스트레이츠 타임스’ 인터뷰에서 자신을 “우연히 된 번역가”라고 표현했다. K팝 아이돌 가수의 한국어 트위터 내용을 영문으로 옮겨보다가 우연히 번역 쪽으로 들어서게 됐다고 한다. 그렇게 2008년부터 한국어를 독학하며 익힌 지 15년째다. 한국 문학 영문 번역에 관심을 갖게 된 건, 스웨덴 스톡홀름에서 태어나 여러 국가를 다니며 성장한 한국인 번역가 안톤 허(허정범)가 번역한 신경숙 작가 작품 ‘리진(The Court Dancer)’을 읽어본 것이 계기가 됐다. 언어와 언어가 아닌 문화와 문화를 소통시키는 문학 번역을 새로운 시각으로 보게 됐다. 훗날 만난 안톤 허가 격려를 해주며 가장 든든한 후원자로 나서줬고, 외국 출판사들과 연결도 해줬다.
“번역가 쪽으로 일하게 될 거라고는 생각해 본 적이 없었어요. 막연히 한국 문학 작품들을 더 많은 독자에게 알리는 데 도움되는 일을 해보고 싶다는 생각은 했지만, 그것이 현실이 되고 이렇게 빨리 이뤄질 줄은 몰랐네요.”
샤나 탄은 최근 또 다른 한국 작품 번역 계약도 맺었으나, 출판사와 약속 때문에 아직 작품 내용이나 작가에 대해선 함구하고 있다.

Accidental translator Shanna Tan signs four book deals, including for South Korean bestsellers
Singaporean Shanna Tan stumbled into translation when she translated a tweet from a K-pop idol. “I never really thought I wanted to work towards being a translator. It was a natural journey that just materialised,” says the 33-year-old. The polyglot, who has been self-studying Korean since 2008, also translates from Japanese and Chinese, and is now learning Thai.
Today, the home-grown self-starter is one of the rising stars in translation being tapped by international publishers such as Bloomsbury and Penguin Random House to bring some of South Korea’s bestsellers into the English-language market.
Her debut translation, Welcome To The Hyunam-dong Bookshop by South Korean writer Hwang Bo-reum, is a heart-warming novel that features a bookseller recovering from burnout. Published by Bloomsbury UK in October, the book debuted at No. 2 on The Straits Times’ bestsellers list.
싱가포르인 샤나 탄(Shanna Tan)은 K-pop 아이돌의 트윗을 번역하다 우연히 번역의 길로 들어섰다. 33살의 이 여성은 “저는 제가 번역가가 되고 싶다는 생각을 해본 적이 없어요. 자연스러운 여정 속에서 현실화되었습니다.” 라고 말한다. 2008년부터 한국어를 독학해온 다개국어 사용자인 그녀는 일본어 중국어를 번역하고 지금은 태국어를 배우고 있다.
Hwang’s book began as a serialised novel on the South Korean online writing platform Brunch before gaining the attention of traditional publishers. It has sold more than 200,000 copies in Korean and has been adapted into an audio play. “I’ve always vaguely wanted to do something that brings Korean literature to a wider audience, but I never thought it would happen so fast,” says Tan, who marvels that it has been only two years since she pivoted from commercial translation gigs into literary translation. By most standards, she has had an explosive entrance into the world of literary translation.
황작가의 책은 한국 온라인 글쓰기 플랫폼인 브런치에서 연재된 소설로 시작되어 전통 있는 출판사들에게 주목받기 시작했다. 한국어로 20만부 이상 팔렸고, 오디오 버전으로도 각색되었다. “저는 항상 막연하게 한국 문학을 더 많은 독자들에게 알리는 일을 하고 싶었습니다. 하지만 이렇게 빠르게 현실화될 거라고는 생각치 못했어요.” 라고 탄은 말한다. 대중적인 번역업계에서 문학 번역으로 들어선 지 불과 2년밖에 되지 않았다는 사실이 놀랍다. 그녀의 문학업계 입문은 일반적인 상식으로는 거의 불가능하다.
Her literary translation journey was sparked by reading Anton Hur’s translation of The Court Dancer (2018) by Shin Kyung-sook. “It read so beautifully, and it made me look at literary translation in a new light,” she says.
Fittingly, Hur, who was shortlisted for the International Booker Prize, mentored Tan and became one of her most important advocates, introducing her to key editors who eventually became her publishers.
Tan says: “Singaporean and South Korean societies are quite competitive. This book teaches you to be comfortable in your own skin and that everyone is working towards becoming better versions of themselves.”
안톤 허(Anton Hur)가 번역한 신경숙 작가의 <궁중 무희(2019)>가 그녀의 문학 번역에 대한 열정을 촉발시켰다. “정말 아름답게 읽혔고 문학 번역이라는 것이 저에게 새로운 빛으로 다가왔습니다.”라고 말한다.
딱 맞게도 부커상 후보에 오른 허(Hur)는 탄의 멘토가 되었고 그녀에게 가장 큰 지지자 중 한 명이 되었다. 또한 그녀를 요직의 에디터들에게 소개했다.
탄씨는 “싱가포르와 한국 사회는 상당히 치열합니다. 이 책은 독자들에게 릴렉스되고 모두가 더 나은 사람이 될 수 있는 방법을 알려주고 있습니다”
