방탄소년단(BTS) 멤버인 지민과 정국이 12일 한 육군 사단 신병교육대에 입소해 군 복무를 시작했다. 지난해 12월 맏형 진을 시작으로 올해 4월 제이홉, 9월 슈가(사회복무요원·social service agent), 지난 11일 RM과 뷔에 이어 나머지 두 멤버도 현역으로 입대함으로써 BTS 7인 전원이 병역 의무를 이행하게 됐다. 이들의 전역 예정일은 2025년 6월로, BTS는 그 이후 팀 활동을 재개할 예정이다.

Group BTS member, Jimin and Jungkook entered an army division’s boot camp in December 12, and began their military service. Starting with the eldest Jin was first in December of the last year, J-hope in April, Sugar (social service agent) in September, and the rest member, RM and V in December 11, enlisted for active duty. All seven members fulfilled their military service obligations. Their scheduled discharge date is June 2025, and BTS plans to resume team activities after that.

 

 

이를 두고 BTS 멤버들이 비로소 진짜 ‘아미’가 됐다는 비유가 나온다. BTS 팬덤 이름이 ‘아미(ARMY)’인데, 이들이 군에 입대함으로써 자신들을 사랑해주는 ‘ARMY’ 대열에 직접 합류했다고 반기는 표현이다. 그나저나 ‘아미’라는 팬클럽 이름은 어떻게 생겨났으며, 무엇을 상징하는걸까. 전 세계적 인기가 거듭되면서 여러 겹 쌓인 사연과 뜻이 있다고 한다.

With such a background, people use a metaphor that BTS members finally become ARMY. It is an expression of welcoming that they have directly joined the ranks of ‘ARMY’ who love them by enlisting in the real army. By the way, how the fandom name of ‘ARMY’ created, and what stands for? It is said to have multilayered stories and meanings as the popularity of BTS has been increased.

 

 

‘ARMY’라는 명칭을 처음 발표한 건 2013년 7월 9일이다. 하지만 이후 최종 결정될 때까지 많은 선택안을 거쳤다. 멤버 지민은 2021년 팬클럽 비디오를 통해 경쟁 후보 중 하나는 ‘체리(Cherry)’였다고 밝힌 바 있다. 얼마 후 BTS 리더인 RM은 최종 후보가 ‘ARMY’와 ‘Bell’로 압축됐다고 공개했다. ‘Bell’은 BTS의 한국어 이름인 ‘방탄소년단’ 발음을 연상시키는 ‘방울’이라는 뜻에서 한때 각광받았다.

The name ‘ARMY’ was first announced at July 9, 2013. However, lots of choices had gone through multiple options until the final decision was made. One of the members Jimin revealed in video clip of fanclub that one of the competing candidates was ‘Cherry’. Soon after, the leader of BTS, RM revealed that the final candidates had been narrowed down to ‘ARMY’ and ‘Bell’. ‘Bell’ was once in the spotlight because it means ‘drop’, reminiscent of the pronunciation of ‘BTS’, the Korean name of BTS.

 

 

공식 명칭으로 최종 낙점된 ‘ARMY’는 팬들을 BTS의 핵심 가치와 개념에 연결시켜주는 두 가지 해석이 가능하다는 점에서 탁월한 선택이었다는 평을 듣는다. 첫째는 ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts’으로 번역되는 ‘방탄소년단’ 개념을 잘 반영해준다는 것이다. 둘째는 ‘ARMY’가 ‘Adorable Representative MC for Youth(청춘을 위한 사랑스러운 대표적 사회자)’의 머리글자로, 젊음을 대변하는 BTS 음악의 요체를 제대로 짚었다는 점이다. 영어 단어 army에는 ‘군대’ ‘육군’ 뜻 외에 ‘특정 목적을 위한 사람들 집단’이라는 의미도 있다.

Finally selected as the official name, ‘ARMY’ is said to be an excellent choice in that it connects the fandom to BTS’s core values and concept and allow for two interpretations. First, it reflects enough the concept of ‘BTS’ which is translated as ‘Bulletproof Boy Scouts’. Secondly, it accurately pointed out the essence of BTS music which represents the youth, because the ‘ARMY’ is the acronym of ‘Adorable Representative MC for Youth’. The word ‘army’, which means literally ‘army’ and also has the meaning of ‘a group of people for a specific purpose’.

 

 

시간이 지나면서 ‘ARMY’는 팬들로부터 또 다른 새 의미도 얻게 됐다. 발음이 비슷한 프랑스어 단어 ‘ami’가 ‘친구’를 뜻해 BTS 멤버들과 팬들의 친밀한 관계를 잘 묘사해준다는 부가가치까지 얻게 됐다. 그런데 ARMY의 많은 회원조차 미처 모르는 의미도 있다. RM은 지난해 3월 잠실종합운동장 주경기장에서 열린 서울 공연에서 “코로나 팬데믹 기간 중 ARMY의 환호 소리를 듣지 못했다”며 “‘아미’는 팬 여러분이 저희에게 들려주는 ‘아름다운 미성’의 줄인 말이기도 하다”고 밝혔다.

As time passed, ‘ARMY’ acquired another new meaning from the fans. The French word ‘ami’, which means friends, has a similar pronunciation and gain the added value as well describing the close relationship between BTS members and fans. By the way, there is also meaning that even lots of member of ARMY are not aware of. At the Seoul concert held at the main stadium of Jamsil Sports Complex in March last year, RM said “During the COVID-19 pandemic, I couldn’t hear ARMY’s cheering, so ‘ARMY’ is an ‘abbreviation of beautiful voices’ that fans tell us.
