BTS 7명이 예외 없이 전원 입대하자 한국의 병역 의무가 새삼 전 세계의 관심거리가 됐다. 그러나 병역 의무제를 시행하는 나라는 한국과 북한뿐 아니다. 49국이 특정 연령에 일정 기간 의무 병역제를 실시하고 있다. 많은 국가는 냉전 종식 이후 병역 의무제를 폐지했다. 그런데 러시아의 우크라이나 침공을 계기로 몇몇 유럽 국가가 재도입을 검토하고 있다. 러시아와 국경을 맞댄 라트비아는 당장 내년부터 모든 18~27세 남성의 11개월간 의무 복무를 단행하기로 했다.

There are slight differences between countries with mandatory military service. Greece imposes 12 months of military service on men between the age of 19 and 45, and they should implement the military service regardless of their foreign citizenship possession or foreign residence status. Switzerland implements a conscription system for men aged 18 to 25, but allows alternative service as public service personnel, and if neither is done, they are liable to pay a levy called the military service exemption tax. In Austria, the men aged 18 to 35 can choose either 6 months military service or 9 months public service, and Danish men should do military service for 3 to 14 months depending on the characteristics of troops, and the disposition is done through balloting.

Meanwhile, in Thailand, after turning the age of 18, the men are organized into reserve force, and then become eligible for official (or formal) enlistment at the age of 21. In every April, recruits are selected through a lottery-style draw. Norway summons people aged 19 to 44 to military bases, without gender distinction, and then conscripts about 15% of them into active duty for 19 months. In case of Egypt, the term of military service is 1 to 3 years, and Egyptian people can travel, get married and get a job after 1 more year service. Foreign residents can be exempted by paying 5,000 dollars (about 6.5 million won). In Israel, men must serve in the military for at least 32 months and women do for at least 24 months, but exceptions are made for Israel Arabs and religious women. North Koreans are conscripted twice a year, in April and August. Men are required to enlist at the age of 18 and serve for 10 years. Women are now serving until the age of 23 after graduating from high school, as volunteer enlistment became mandatory in 2015.
아르메니아는 의무 복무 기간이 2년이며, 병역을 회피할 경우 최고 3년 징역형에 처한다. 벨라루스에선 상급 교육기관 진학 예정인 병사는 12개월, 그렇지 않으면 18개월 의무 복무를 원칙으로 한다. 요르단은 독특한 제도를 적용하고 있다. 25~29세 남성이 무직 상태인 경우엔 무조건 징집돼 12개월 복무를 해야 한다. 그에 따른 각종 비리와 부작용이 횡행할 것 같은데, 워낙 쉬쉬해서 외부에 알려진 것은 별로 없다.
Armenia imposes 2-year mandatory service on men and if they evade military service, they will be sentenced to up to 3 years in prison. In Belarus, soldiers who plan to enter higher education institutions must serve compulsory service for 12 months, otherwise they must serve for 18 months. Jordan applies a unique system. If a man between 25 to 29 is unemployed, he must be conscripted and serve for 12 months. It seems that corruptions and side effects are rampant as a result, but people are so much hushed up, nothing is known to the outside.
