욕심 많은 쥐의 최후

 

욕심 많은 쥐가 옥수수가 가득 담긴 바구니를 발견했다. 바구니에 작은 구멍을 냈다. 그러고는 구멍 안으로 비집고 들어가 마음껏 옥수수를 먹었다. 배가 불러 포만감을 느낀 쥐는 바구니에 들어갔던 그 작은 구멍을 통해 나오려고 했다. 그런데 나올 수가 없었다. 배가 너무 불러서 구멍을 통과할 수 없었다. 아무리 애를 써도 소용없었다. 절망에 빠진 나머지 울기 시작했다. 마침 옆을 지나가던 토끼가 쥐의 울음소리를 듣고는 다가가서 사연을 물었다. 쥐는 "작은 구멍을 내고 들어와 옥수수를 먹었는데 그 구멍을 통해 빠져나갈 수가 없다"고 하소연했다. 그 말을 들은 토끼는 "너무 많이 먹어서 그렇구먼. 배가 꺼질 때까지 기다렸다가 홀쭉해지면 나오라"며 코웃음을 치고는 가버렸다. 

A greedy mouse found a basket full of corn. She made a small hole in the basket, and squeezed in through the hole, and then ate her fill. Feeling full, she tried to come out through the small hole that she had used, but she couldn’t. So much full, she couldn’t get out. Every effort was of no use. The mouse was so devastated that started crying. Just in time, the rabbit who was passing by heard the mouse’s cries and approached it to ask the story. She moaned “I made a small hole in the basket and ate corns, but I was unable to get out through the hole.” After hearing that, the rabbit laughed sardonically and went away, as saying “You ate too much, so you should wait, until your stomach shrinks and come out when you get slim,”

 

 

쥐는 바구니 안에서 잠이 들었다. 다음날 아침, 배가 꺼져 있었다. 그런데 옥수수를 좀더 먹고 싶었다. 그래서 바구니에서 빠져 나갈 생각은 잊어버리고 배가 부르도록 마구 먹어댔다. 또다시 나갈 수가 없게 됐다. 잠시 후 후회했지만 어쩔 수가 없었다. 자포자기했다. "내일 나가면 되지 뭐가 문제야"라고 생각했다. 문제는 그날 그 곁을 지나가던 이는 토끼가 아니라 고양이였다는 것이었다. 바구니 뚜껑을 열고 통통하게 살이 오른 쥐를 본 고양이는 그냥 지나치지 않았다.

The mouse fell asleep. The next morning, she found her stomach shrinks, but she wanted some more. She forgot to get out of the basket and ate until her full. She couldn’t go out again. After a while, she regretted it, but there are no other options. She gave herself up to despair, as thinking “I can go out tomorrow, what’s the problem?”

The problem was that the passerby that day was not a rabbit but a cat. The cat lifted the lid of the basket and didn’t just pass the mouse with getting plump, after she found the mouse.
