나는 누구 또는 무엇을 더 사랑하는가

(Who or what do I love more)

 

 

한 남자가 멋진 신형 승용차를 샀다. 매일 윤이 나도록 닦았다.

A man bought a nice brand-new car. He polishes it, every day.

 

 

어느 화창한 오후, 그날도 열심히 광택을 내고 있는데, 네 살짜리 딸이 그에게 뛰어왔다. 그런데 잠깐 한눈을 파는 사이에 땅에서 작은 돌멩이를 집어들고는 차 옆을 긁어대고 있는 것이 아닌가.

On one sunny afternoon, while he was polishing his car, his four-year-old daughter ran up to him. While he was taking his eyes off, his daughter picked up a small rock from the ground and was scraping the side of the car.

 

 

남자는 순간적으로 화가 나서 신경질적으로 어린 딸의 손을 잡아챘다. 자신도 모르는 사이에 미친 듯이 소리를 질렀다. 어린 딸은 공포감에 싸여 바들바들 떨고 있었다. 얼굴은 창백해지다 못해 백짓장처럼 새하얘졌다. 한참이 지나서야 두려움과 슬픔에 젖은 눈으로 아빠를 바라보며 딸은 더듬으며 말했다.

“아빠, 나 너무 무서워. 잘못했어. 용서해주세요.”

The man became instantly upset and nervously snatched his young daughter’s hand. Unconsciously, he yelled his head off. The young daughter was trembling with fear. Her face became(turned) all pale as white as a white paper. Long after, as looking at her dad with eyes filled with fear and sadness, she stammered.

“Dad, I am so scared, please forgive me."

 

 

남자는 그제야 자신이 얼마나 한심한 잘못을 저질렀는지 깨닫고는 눈물을 떨궜다. 차가 있는 곳으로 돌아가 수도 없이 새 차를 걷어찼다. 자기가 저지른 행동에 망연자실해 차 옆에 털썩 주저앉았다. 죄책감과 회한에 휩싸여 넋이 나갔다. 그제야 어린 딸이 돌멩이로 차에 긁어댄 낙서가 눈에 들어왔다.

“사랑해, 아빠.”

Only then, he realize how he made a pathetic mistake, so shed tears. He came back to his car and kicked his new car countless times. He was devastated by his action and flopped down next to the car. Filled with a sense of guilt and remorse, he almost lost himself. Only afterward, her daughter’s graffiti on the car with a rock met (meet-met-met) his eyes.

 

“Love you, Dad”

 

 

☞ 물건은 사용되는(be used) 것이고, 사람은 사랑받는(be loved) 존재다. 그런데 오늘날 세상에선(in today’s world) 사람이 사용되고, 물건이 사랑을 받는다.

Things are meant to be used, and people are meant to be loved. However, in today’s world, people are used and things are loved.
