The Reason Why She should be sad

 

 

한 청년이 어떤 젊은 여성을 사랑하게 됐다. 그 여성은 그다지 예쁘지도, 매력적이지도 않았다. 하지만 청년에겐 그 여성이 세상에서 가장 소중한 사람이 됐다. 시도 때도 없이 그녀 꿈을 꾸곤 했다. 남은 인생을 그녀와 함께하는 상상을 하곤 했다. 친구들이 말했다. “그 여성이 너를 좋아하는지도 모르면서 헛된 꿈을 꾸는 거니? 우선 네 감정을 고백하고, 그 여성도 너를 좋아하는지 물어봐야 할 것 아니냐.” 청년도 그러는 것이 옳겠다고 생각했다.

A young man fell in love with a young lady. She was neither very pretty nor attractive. However, she became the most precious person in the world to the young man. He used to dream of her all the time and imagined to spend the rest of life with her. His friends said, “Why are you dreaming such a vain dream when you don’t even know whether she like you? Firstly, you have to confess your feelings and ask if she like you too.” He thought it would be right.

 

 

그 여성은 청년이 자신을 흠모한다는 사실을 처음부터 알고 있었다. 하지만 무슨 이유에서인지 청년의 사랑 고백을 거절했다. 친구들은 청년이 절망에 빠져 술과 담배로 시간을 보내며 자신의 삶을 망가뜨릴 것으로 걱정했다. 그런데 놀랍게도 청년은 전혀 실망하거나 낙담하지 않았다. 친구들은 청년을 위로해주면서 “어떻게 그렇게 슬퍼하거나 절망하지 않을 수 있느냐”고 물었다. 그러자 청년이 이렇게 대답했다. ”내가 왜 슬퍼해야 해? 나는 나를 사랑하지 않는 사람을 잃었지만, 그녀는 자신을 진심으로 사랑하고 아껴주는 사람을 잃었으니 그녀가 슬퍼해야지.”

The woman knew from the beginning that he adores herself, but for some reason she rejected his confession of love. His friends were worried that he would fall into despair and ruin his life by spending his time drinking and smoking. However, to their surprise, the young man was not disappointed or discouraged at all.

They consoled him and asked “How can you not be sad or despairing?” Then, the young man answered: “Why should I be sad? I lost someone who didn’t love me, but she lost someone who really loved and cared for her, so she should be sad.”

 

 

☞ 진실한 사랑(true love)은 이루기 힘들다(be hard to attain). 사랑은 어떤 대가도 바라지 않고(without expecting anything in return) 자신의 모든 것을 주는 것이다. 사랑은 거절하는 사람이 인생에서 가장 중요한 것을 잃게 되는(lose the most precious thing in life) 것이니 사랑을 하는 사람이 상실감을 느낄(feel dejected) 필요가 전혀 없다.

 

True love is hard to attain. Love is giving your all without expecting anything in return. The one who rejects love loses the most precious thing in life, so there’s no need for the one who loves to feel dejected.
